Community service is one of the Tri Dharma (principles) of Higher Education that must be conducted by lecturers besides teaching and research. Lecturers at Universitas Negeri Padang conducted a lot of community service activities in various fields. One of the expected outputs from these activities is a scientific work. However, it is difficult for the lecturers conducting the community service, especially at Universitas Negeri Padang, to find a place for publishing the work. Therefore, the Laboratory of Sociology Department initiated to create a journal dedicated to publish articles with the theme of community service in 2019. The first Board was chaired by Dr. Eka Vidya Putra, S.Sos., M.Si (Editor In Chief), who also served as the Head of the Laboratory of Sociology Department, Faculty of Social Sciences, Universitas Negeri Padang. The proposal for the formation of Abdi: Jurnal Pengabdian dan Pemberdayaan Masyarakat started in December 2018 with the hope that the first edition of the journal would have been published by July 2019. The name of the journal, Abdi: Jurnal Pengabdian dan Pemberdayaan Masyarakat was derived from Pengabdian (devotion/service). After submitting the proposal, the journal’s Board immediately formed the Editorial Board and reviewers by contacting academics working in the university and those from outside to contribute to the journal. In May 2019, Abdi: Jurnal Pengabdian dan Pemberdayaan Masyarakat succeeded in publishing its first edition and is now ready to welcome other articles with the theme of community service and community empowerment.
